Who We Are - Purpose

  • Improve the performance standard of Mercer students and local community pipers and drummers  both as individuals and as an ensemble
  • Provide instruction to all persons interested in joining the Pipes  and Drums
  • Represent Mercer University in the presentation of pipe music and  pipe band performance
  • Build a corps of musicians capable of competitive regrading to  higher levels

Our Story

  • Origins: The group was formed in the late 1990s as part of a mission to bring Scottish Highland culture and Celtic music to Mercer University. After a period of operating independently, the band consolidated with Mercer and took on its current name.
  • Performances: The ensemble is a staple at traditional campus milestones. They regularly lead the graduating seniors on their ceremonial march during Baccalaureate across Cruz Plaza and perform at Macon and School of Medicine commencements.
  • Community Engagement: Beyond university events, the Pipes and Drums act as musical ambassadors. They perform at regional gatherings like the annual Stone Mountain Highland Games, parades, and various historical celebrations throughout Georgia.
  • Membership & Practice: The group is a close-knit ensemble composed of both Mercer students and local residents. They offer instruction for beginners and host weekly practices on the Macon campus in Willingham Hall.
